Sixty million Indians will get heart disease
Heart disease is a killer, and accounts for many millions of deaths worldwide each and every year. Despite continued research into the causes of heart disease the number of deaths is rising on a daily basis, and India accounts for around 60% of the worlds total cardiovascular related deaths. Genetic research has indicated why this may be the case showing that 60 million Indians have a single genetic mutation in the gene MYBPC3 which codes for a heart protein. A mutation results in abnormal production of this protein, and young people can erradicate the protein but as the body slows down into old age the protein accumulates exerting harmful effects such as high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac arrest. These all lead to death. A study in India showed that 90% of old people with the mutation had heart problems whereas those who were healthy did not have the mutated gene. The gene is being passed down through the generations and so the risk of heart disease will continue to risk in this population.
Cardiologists and clinical researchers will need to get their heads down and find a way to combat the gene for good. Millions will die from heart disease
